Russell Thompson

Russell Thompson, 79, of Van Horne, Iowa, died Sunday, April 22, 2001 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, following a sudden illness.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 25, at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Van Horne with Rev. Bruce Kaltwasser officiating.

Interment was in St. John Cemetery, rural Newhall. Phillips Funeral Home of Keystone, Iowa, handled arrangements.

Russell Thompson was born Feb. 22, 1922 in Van Horne, the son of Oakley and Ida Roth Thompson.

He graduated from the Blairstown High School, and on April 13, 1947 he married LaVonne Koopman at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall, Iowa.

The couple farmed in the Van Horne area for many years and Russell Thompson also worked at Klinger Paint in Cedar Rapids, retiring in 1994.

He was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Van Horne and was a member of the Van Horne Cooperative Telephone Company board of directors.

Russell Thompson was an avid golfer and a member of Tara Hills Country Club in Van Horne. He loved sports of all kinds and especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events.

Survivors include his wife, LaVonne Thompson of Van Horne; one son, Doug Thompson of Van Horne; one daughter, Cynthia and Mark Alber of DECORAH; three grandchildren, Amy, Brad and Justin Albers and Brad's friend Martha Carroll; and his twin sister, Rozella Radeke of North Carolina.

Russell Thompson was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Bonnie Christie.
