Catherine Elizabeth Smith

Catherine E. Smith, 92, of Waucoma, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at her son's home in Hanover, Md., of natural causes.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 14, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma, with the Rev. Vincent J. Simon officiating.

Organist was Jeanie Riha. She accompanied the St. Mary's choir singing "Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art" and "Panis Angelicas."

Mass servers were Lisa Winter, Jackie Mihm and Chris Mihm. Lectors were Steve Smith and Jan Smith. Gift bearers were Christy, Katie and Joey Grosso. Pall placers were Catherine's two sons, James and David.

Casket bearers were Mike Smith, Chris Smith, Dave Smith, Steve Smith, Frank Grosso, Rick McPheron, Larry Anderson and Edward Smith.

Burial was at the St. Mary's Cemetery in New Hampton. The Conway Funeral Home in New Hampton handled arrangements. Visitation included a Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary.

Catherine Elizabeth (Meyer) Smith was born June 10, 1907, at OSSIAN, the daughter of Louis J. and Anna (Hauer) Meyer. She attended De Sales School in OSSIAN. The family then moved to Waucoma.

Catherine married Theon J. Smith June 7, 1927, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma. After marriage, the couple lived in Waucoma. They were married 62 years.

Catherine was a school cook for 23 years at Waucoma Public School and at Turkey Valley School. She also cooked at Lorraine's Cafe and did house cleaning in the Waucoma area.

For the past eight years she had been spending summers in Waucoma and dividing the winter months between her two son's homes.

She was the president of St. Mary's Guild for two years, the Rosary Society for two years and was a lifelong member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court Queenship of Mary 1806. She enjoyed playing cards.

Survivors include two sons, David and Marsha Smith of Hanover, Md., and James and Marge Smith of Cordova, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; and 23 greatgrandchildren.

Catherine Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Theon, in 1989; two sons, Gerald and Theon Jr.; two sisters, Agnes Brady and Theresa Schissel; and two brothers, Ed and Tom Meyer.
