Mabel Jensen

Mabel Jensen, 79, of Bennet, Neb., died Tuesday, June 5, 2001 in Waverly, Neb.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 8 at 10:30 a.m. at Bennet Community| Church, in Bennet with Rev. Perry Holmgren officiating.

Pallbearers were Clark Jensen, Ryan Jensen, Shaun Jensen, Renee Jensen, Carrie Jensen and Christy Jensen.

Honorary Pallbearers were Dawn Martin, Kirk Jensen, Jordyn Jensen, Tammy Straka, Tracy Sic, Sherry Sic, Marty Lemke and Wally Sic.

Musical selections included 'The Old Rugged Cross' and 'In the Garden.'

Organist was Muriel Sic and soloist Joan Francis sang "How Great Thou Art."

Interment was in Bennet Cemetery in Bennet, with arrangements by Roper & Sons Mortuary of Lincoln, Neb.

Mabel Hexum was born Nov. 8, 1921 in Waukon, the fifth child of Carl and Emma (Johnson) Hexum.

She attended school in Waukon and graduated from high school there in 1939.

She then attended Northwest Missouri State University in Marysville, Mo., where she received her teaching certificate.

Mabel Hexum taught rural school in Missouri for several years before moving to Bennet, where she started teaching in the local grade school.

While in Bennet, she met a local farmer named Merle Jensen, who became the love of her life.

The two were united in marriage April 16, 1944. Four children were born to this union: Claude, Owen, Warren and Muriel.

Mabel Jensen quit teaching for several years to raise her family before resuming her career in 1958. She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she received her bachelor's and later master's degrees. She continued to teach until her retirement in 1987.

Mabel Jensen was always active in her church and community, and her hobbies included cooking, fishing, gardening and serving others.

Survivors included her husband, Merle Jensen; her sons and daughters-in-law, Claude and Linda Jensen of Bennet; Owen and Marilyn Jensen of Mead, Neb.; Warren and Sandy Jensen of Allen, Neb.; and her daughter and son-in-law, Muriel and Charles Sic of Philomath, Ore.

Additional survivors include two sisters, Helen Easier and Esther Hill, both of Decorah, a sister-in-law, Myrtle Hexum of Postville; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and many friends.
