Joseph Tysland

Joseph Tysland, 73, of Waukon, died Friday, July 9, 1999, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 12, at 10:30 a.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with the Revs. Lynn Groe and David Schafer officiating.

Casket bearers were his grandchildren. Honorary bearers were Robert Anderson, Charles Bakke, Dale Spiegler, Robert Reisner, Oliver Roderick and Joe Norton.

Burial was at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon, with graveside military rites by Waukon Veterans. The Martin Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Joseph LaVerne Tysland was born Nov. 21, 1925, in Waukon, the son of Joseph and Vilda (Grimsgard) Tysland. He was baptized and confirmed at the Waterville Lutheran Church.

He graduated from Waterville High School and attended the University of Iowa, where he played basketball for a year before enlisting in the United States Navy. He served from 1944-45 as an apprentice seaman.

On Aug. 18, 1946, he married Clarice Todd at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon.

Joe worked for Todd's Hatchery, Skelly Home Oil Co., and two area sale barns. Most of his working career, he and Clarice owned and operated, the Longbranch Lounge in FRANKVILLE and the Fireplace Lounge and Restaurant in Waukon.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the Waukon Volunteer Fire Dept. and a 50-year member of the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, bowling and golf.

Joe played a lot of baseball when he was younger on the Waukon Town Team. He was an avid sports fan and followed the high school teams and the Chicago Cubs. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Clarice; a daughter, Janell and Rick Stewart of Tomah, Wis.; three sons, Lonnie and Charlotte Tysland, and Reggie and Denise Tysland, of Waukon, and Randy Tysland of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Vera Marshall of San Diego, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Tully, Kerry, Shannon and Eric Tysland, Montana Stewart, Tina Francis, Corina Turriff, and Tanya and Cassie Tysland; and five great-grandchildren, Brianna, Maren, Cody, Tyler and Jordan.

Joseph Tysland was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Louella Barton and Charlotte Thomas; and his brother, Clifton Tysland.
