Irma Charlotte Sande

Irma Sande, 95, of Decorah, died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 11, at 1:30 p.m., at the Decorah Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Tim Tostengard and the Rev. James Glesne officiating.

Diane Kvamme was the organist. Mary Arneson was the soloist.

Casket bearers were her grandchildren: Mark, Daryl, Frank, Renae and Pat O'Connell; Harlan, Lee, Ilene and Pamela Sande; Roxanne Carlson, Janet Fritsch, Linda Mewhorter, Nancy Silkey and Karen O'Connell Schlechtinger.

Honorary bearers were Larry Ramstad, Horace Seegmiller, Eugene Sande, Ron Borsheim, Harold Erickson, Harold Cronin, Tom Erickson and Leo Nagel.

Interment at the Springwater Cemetery of rural Decorah. The French & Balik Funeral Home in Decorah handled arrangements.

Irma Charlotte (Opfer) was born at her family home in Waukon, in Ludlow Township of Allamakee county, Jan. 10, 1904, the daughter of Fred and Clara (Ludeking) Opfer.

She was baptized in 1904, and confirmed at Zion Reformed Church in 1918. Irma graduated from Waukon High School in 1921.

After working several jobs, her favorite was at Hales Department Store in Decorah. She worked there for 10 years.

On Aug. 2, 1935, Irma was united in marriage with Levi Sande in Cresco. To this union two children were born.

They moved to Locust in 1938 to operate the Locust Store. After that, they made their home in Springwater.

While in Springwater, Irma served as president of the Springwater Ladies Aid from 1944 until the group disbanded in the 1970s.

Survivors include her children, Charlotte and Richard O'Connell of Rochester, Minn., and Howard and Lorna Sande of Decorah; 14 grandchildren (listed as casket bearers); nine great grandchildren; one sister, Helen Gericke of Waukon; several nieces and nephews; and many good friends.

Irma Sande was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Levi, in 1971; and four brothers, Carl, Ally, Clarence and Paul Opfer.
