Vera Rue

Vera Rue, 89, died Monday, March 15, 1999, at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, where she was residing.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 19, at 11 a.m., at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco, with the Rev. Michael Tauke officiating.

Gasket bearers were grandchildren Brian Rue, Scott Rue, Jim Casper, Erich Schissel, Darcy Bryant and Bridget Casper.

Burial was at the Calvary Cemetery, Cresco. The Conway Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Vera Anastacia (Pollitt) Rue was born in Cresco July 19, 1909, the only child of Guy and Nellie (Farrell) Pollitt. She attended Assumption grade school and Cresco High School. She was a lifelong member of the Assumption Church.

Vera was an excellent basketball player and coached the girls basketball team after graduation.

While attending a business college in Cedar Rapids, Vera won an award for typing more than 100 words per minute on a manual typewriter.

After college, she returned to Cresco and worked for the Elwood Law Firm for 20 years. Vera successfully owned and operated the Maid-Rite Cafe in the 1950s.

She sold the restaurant to move to Rochester, Minn., to work for Attorney Al Quie, who was later elected to serve as a United States Senator from Minnesota. Vera moved to Washington, D.C., to run his senate office for several years.

She returned to Cresco to work for Attorney George Laub until she retired in 1970.

During her retired years, she was active in community affairs and volunteered her help to the senior citizens. She enjoyed traveling and visited many parts of the United States.

Vera was married in 1934 to Garvin H. Rue of RIDGEWAY. This union was blessed with three children.

Survivors include her son, George and Darlene Rue of Bloomington, Minn.; her daughter, Janelle and Kenneth Schissel of Redmond, Ore.; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

Vera Rue was preceded in death by her daughter, Janenne Wicks, who resided in DECORAH until her untimely death in a plane crash in Reno, Nev., in 1985; her parents, Guy and Nellie Pollitt; Garvin Rue; and a grandson, Kirk Schissel.
