Dean Bender
Dean Bender, 51, of Fridley, Minn., and formerly of Decorah, died suddenly Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at his home.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m., at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Steven Jacobson officiating.
Connie Bolson will be the organist and Hub Christen will be the soloist. Music will include "The Lord's Prayer" and "How Great Thou Art."
Casket bearers will be Ron Hackler, Dave Hackler, Arnold Hackler, Art Flannigan, Darrell Simonson and Bill Regan. Ushers will be Don Wurtzel and Larry Martinson.
Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery in Locust with full military rites by the V.F.W. Post Helof-Holmes No. 1977.
The French & Balik Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Friends may call at the church one hour before services Thursday.
Dean L. Bender was born Feb. 24, 1948, in Decorah, and was the foster son of Walter and Doris (Peterson) Bender.
He graduated from North Winneshiek School in 1966. He enlisted in the United States Army, serving in Vietnam from April of 1967 until December of 1968, when he was honorably discharged.
Dean married Carol Jean Berge July 12, 1969, and to this union two children were born.
Dean was an owner/operator of his own semi for 15 years. He was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fridley, Minn.; the Eagles Lodge and the Sportsman Club in New Brighton, Minn. and the V.F.W. Lodge in Decorah. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.
Survivors of Dean Bender include his wife, Carol of Fridley, Minn.; one son, Eric Bender and fiancee Jan Betz and her son, Emmttt, of La Crosse, Wis.; one daughter, Lynette and Mike Henry of Cresco; two grandchildren, Anthony and Danielle Henry of Cresco; parents Walter and Doris Bender of Decorah; one sister, Beverly and Herb Heffern of Decorah; mother- and father-in-law Joe and Inez (Gilbertson) Berge of Decorah; brothers-in-law Curt and Marge Berg of Lexington, Ky., and Jeff Berge of Tipton; and sister-in-law Janice and Gary Meyers of Ely, as well as several nieces and nephews.
