George Skoda
George Skoda, 80, of Cresco, died Friday, March 19, 1999, at the Cresco Care Center.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 22, at 11:30 a.m., at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco, with the Rev. Michael Tauke officiating.
Casket bearers were Todd, Travis, Thad, Jeremy, Jason and Jamie Skoda, grandsons of George.
Burial was at the Calvary Cemetery, Cresco. The Conway Funeral Home handled arrangements.
George Frank Skoda was born July 10, 1918, in Spillville, the son of George and Anna (Cibuzar) Skoda. He attended school in the Spillville and Protivin areas, and graduated from Cresco High School.
He worked at various grocery stores and drove a bakery truck out of Cresco prior to his entering the United States Armed Forces in 1942. He was discharged in 1946 and returned home.
On May 4, 1946, he was united in marriage with Eloise Knox at the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Plymouth Rock.
Following his marriage, George worked at the Puritan Locker and eventually bought the Puritan Candy Co.
George was a sportsman who liked to hunt and fish. He also liked to play cards and visit with his many friends.
Survivors include his wife, Eloise; four sons, Joseph of Rock Valley, Jim of Des Moines, Jerry of Decorah and John of Cresco; one daughter, Janice Skoda of Cresco; 10 grandchildren; and one sister, Phyllis Bohnert of Rosemount, Minn.
George Skoda was preceded in death by his parents.
