Alma Hovden

Alma H. Hovden, 91, of Decorah, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 11 a.m., at the Madison Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, with the Revs. Phillip and Ginny Olson officiating. Martha Olson will be the organist.

Casket bearers will be Mark Olson, Steve Haugen, Loren Jacobsen, Michael Van Sabben, Harold Van Sabben, Wesley Jacobson, Mark Larson and Jason Larson.

Honorary bearers will be Rodney Grindeland, Marc Capalupo, David Capalupo, Billy Jacobson, Gary Jacobson, David Haugen, Ronald Haugen, Eric Jacobson, Jim Jacobson and Scott Jacobson.

Burial will be at the Madison Lutheran Cemetery. The Fjelstul Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Visitation will be held at the church Tuesday after 10 a.m.

Alma H. (Jacobson) Hovden was born Dec. 1, 1908, in Hanover Township of Allamakee County, the daughter of Oscar Albert Jacobson and Ingebor Belle (Ellingson) Jacobson.

She was baptized and confirmed at Big Canoe Lutheran Church, rural Decorah. She attended school through high school.

Alma moved from Allamakee to Winneshiek County when she was 4 years old. She worked oh the farm while growing up. After high school, she went to Milwaukee, Wis., where she worked at a laundry and a candy factory.

Alma also worked in Chicago during this time. She was at Aeronautical Service the year Lindbergh made his famous flight. Alma always returned home to work on the farm each spring. Back in Decorah, Alma worked at the Decorah Produce and then at the Launderette.

Alma was married to Elvin Hovden Nov. 30, 1960, in Spring Valley, Minn. After she married Elvin, she worked with him on their farm and also worked at the Cozy in Ridgeway.

Remembered as being generous, Alma was a caregiver who would take care of anyone who was ill or needed help. She was close to all her nieces, nephews and their families.

Alma was a member of Madison Lutheran Church.

Survivors include nephews Merlin and Doris Grindeland of Edwardsburg, Mich., Galen Jacobson of Decorah, Roger and Jerene Jacobson of Prescott, Ariz., Rodney and Mary Jacobson of Cedar Rapids, Lamoyne and Elaine Jacobson of El Cajon, Calif., Duane and Wanda Jacobson of Belvidere, IL., and Lyle and Babe Jacobson of Baldwin, IL.

Also surviving are nieces Lila and Dale Johnson of Heber Springs, Alaska, Esther Capalupo of West Hills, Calif., Helen and Kenneth Olson of Decorah, Ellen and John Van Sabben of Northwood, and Marlys Larson of Marion; and many great-nephews and great-nieces.

Alma Hovden was preceded in death by her father, who died April 24, 1939; her mother, who died Jan. 10, 1957; her husband, Elvin Hovden, who died Nov. 2, 1974; her brothers, Carl H. Jacobson, Ove I. Jacobson and Emmett R. Jacobson; her sisters Gladys A. Grindeland (Mrs. Walter), Anna K. Haugen (Mrs. Pete) and Beona H. Ward, (Mrs. Jack); nephews; Robert Haugen, Norman Haugen and Owen Jacobson at age 13; and niece Eileen Jacobson at age 9 years.
