Le Verne Blount

Col.(Ret.) Le Verne Edwin Blount, 78, of Pinehurst, N.C., died Monday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Plantation, Fla. following a heart attack.

He was buried at the United States Military Academy at West Point, from which he graduated in 1943.

He was born in Decorah,the son of John Edwin and Ellen (Hegtvedt) Blount. He graduated from Decorah High School and then attended Marion Military Institute before enrolling at West Point.

Following his graduation from West Point, he served in the United States Army in France and Germany during World War II, and later in Vietnam. He was commander of SASCOM in Frankfurt, Germany, from 1969-72, and concluded his military career at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas.

During his military service, Ed was awarded the Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star with Valor, the Purple Heart and the Medaille de la Francaise.

Survivors include his wife, Gillian; children David (Cecilia), Bruce (Barbara), Kathy, Robin (Jeanette) and Jonathan (Coleen) and by nine grandchildren.

All of his children and grandchildren were present at the Holly Inn in Pine Hurst, N.C., this past Thanksgiving for a party honoring Ed and Lillian on their wedding anniversary.
