Clarence Payne

The Rev. Clarence Arnold Payne, 89, of Decorah, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at the Aase Haugen Home, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 13, at 10:15 a.m., at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, with the Rev. O. Paul Hougen officiating.

Burial was at the Calmar Lutheran Cemetery. The French Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Clarence was born April 6, 1910, in Calmar, the son of Claude and Gena (Verne) Payne. He attended and graduated from Waterloo High School.

He received a master's degree and doctorate degree in theology and osteopathy. Clarence was a minister in the Missouri Synod, serving his last congregation in Pulaski, Miss.

Survivors include one daughter, Adell Spil of Matthew, N.C.; two cousins, Mildred Eastman of LeHigh Acres, Fla., and Paul Eppens of Albany, Mo.; four grandchildren, Gina Spil, Jerrod Spil, Kristine McNeill and Angela McNeill; and one great-grandson, Eric.

Clarence Payne was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rosalie, who died in 1994; and one daughter, Gina McNeill, who died in 1972.
