Lois Jeanette Monroe, 59, of Ossian, died Thursday, July 9, 1992 at the Palmer-Lutheran Health Center in West Union, following a brief illness. She was born May 2, 1933, the daughter of Leo B. Peterson and the late Julia Charlotte (Quass) Peterson in rural Ossian, Dover Township, Fayette County.

Lois was baptized and confirmed in her faith at the First Lutheran Church in rural Ossian. She was educated at Dover No. 6 school and graduated from West Union High School and Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls.

On Sept. 2, 1951, she married Virgil Dean Monroe at First Lutheran Church. They made their home on a farm south of Ossian where she lived until her death. They had seven children.

Lois was an active member of First Lutheran Church and a member of many church organizations. She held numerous offices, was a Sunday School teacher for many years and was church organist several years. She also belonged to the A.L.C.W. and the Ruth Circle. She also was very active in the Dover No. 6 Historical Society and the community.

Following her marriage she taught school in the Dover Township Schools for three years and after raising her family, she was a substitute teacher in area schools for twelve years.

Survivors include her husband, Virgil; her father, Leo B. Peterson of Ossian; a daughter, Julienne and her husband, Randy Smith of Grinnell; five sons: Leo V. Monroe and his wife Cheryle of Ossian; LeVirgil F. Monroe and his wife, Marie of Clermont; Leland V. Monroe and his wife, Lynn of Ossian; Layne V. Monroe and his fiance, Dawn, of Johnston and Jeffrey D. Monroe of Ossian.

Also surviving are three sisters: Audrey Vagts of West Union, Marjorie Borseth of Decorah, and Judy Ehler of Ossian; two grandsons, Tyler and Travis Smith; and four granddaughters, Tiffany, Stacey, Kimberly and Morgan Monroe.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Jayne Monroe in infancy and her mother Julia in 1980.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 13, 1992 at First Lutheran Church in rural Ossian, Rev. Roger McKinstry officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Flower girls were Diane Granger, Kathy Ehler and Marcia Foadian. Honorary pallbearers were Barb Schuman, Dana Moore, Kendra Hageman and Marlys Bushman. Casket bearers were Mark Vagts, Dean Ehler, Chad Ehler, Mark Ney, Bruce Ehler, Joel Ehler, Chuck Bushman and Kyle Quass.

Schmitz Funeral Home in Ossian was in charge of arrangements.
