Leon S. Anderson
Leon S. Anderson, age 71, of Minneapolis, Minn., husband of former Decorah resident Joann Dirks, died at home Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, of eight brain tumors due to metastasized melanoma.
A memorial service was held Monday Aug. 23, at 5 p.m., at Richfield United Methodist Church, 58th and Lyndale Ave. South, in Minneapolis, Minn., followed by supper at the church.
Interment of his cremains will be at a later date at Canoe Methodist Cemetery, rural Decorah.
Leon, a retired Minneapolis postal clerk, was born Jan. 30, 1928, at Luverne, Minn. He served in the United States Navy from 1946-1948.
He was a 1952 graduate of Augustana College, Sioux Falls, S.D.; a Minneapolis Library volunteer; and a member of Happy Wanderers, a harmonica group.
Leon was a gentle, quiet man with a dry wit. He enjoyed his family, music, books, libraries, and home fix-it projects.
Survivors include his wife, Joann (nee Dirks); daughter Nancy Anderson and her husband Eric Koester of Minneapolis; sister Margaret (Warren) Hoh of Estelline, S.D.; brother Toby (Margy) Anderson of Luverne, Minn.; niece Julie (Wes) Obritsch of Stillwater, Minn.; nephew Tim (Barb) Anderson of Luverne, Minn.; Joann's sisters Bette Canny of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Muriel (Bob) Lounsberry of McCallsburg; many nieces and nephews; and special neighbor Shelley Peterson.
Memorials preferred to Augsburg Park Library, Richfield (or another favorite library); or Hospice of the Lakes, P.O. Box 1309, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55440-8725.
