Arthur J. Headington

Arthur J. Headington, O.D., 95, of Decorah, died Monday, May 22, 2000, at the Aase Haugen Home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 25, at 11 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Decorah, with the Rey. James Dale officiating. The Rev. Kristen Kvamme will be the organist.

Casket bearers will be Decorah Rotary Club members Gerald Aulwes, William R. Brown, Jim Priest, George Hagen, Paul Scott and Robert Teslow.

Burial will be at Phelps Cemetery in Decorah. The Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah is handling arrangements.

Visitation will be held Thursday after 10 a.m. at the church.

Arthur was born Sept. 7, 1904, at Burr Oak, the son of James and Luana (Gates) Headington.

He was a graduate of Decorah High School. Arthur attended Luther College for two years, then went to the Northern Illinois School of Optometry in Chicago, graduating with his optometry degree.

He was married to Ione Farber June 25, 1932, in Sheffield. She died Oct. 11, 1972.

On Jan. 27, 1974, he was married to Elayne L. Baker in Sheffield. She died Jan. 16, 1999.

Art was an optometrist in Decorah for many years. His office was in the Winneshiek Hotel building. After getting his degree, he returned to Decorah and started with E. H. McMasters in his practice. He then became a partner with him. Later Art bought out his partner and was on his own for several years, retiring in 1972.

An active member of First United Methodist Church, Art served on the Church Board. He was a member of Oneota Golf & Country Club, a member of the Rotary Club, where he served as president in 1953-54, and a member of the Decorah Community School Board of Education from 1944-47. Art was an avid golfer. He also was a volunteer Scout Master for the Boy Scouts.

Survivors include one son, Richard Headington of Windsor, Wis., one daughter, Shirley Headington of Decorah; and two grandsons, Michael and Mary of Sun Prairie, Wis., and Eric of Windsor, Wis.

Arthur Headington was preceded in death by his parents; his first and second wife; one brother, Dale; and one sister, Irene Headington.
