Gilles E. Flaherty

Gilles Flaherty, 83, of Decorah, died Friday, Jan 5, 2001 at Oneota Riverview Care Facility.

There is no visitation. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 10 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery, with full military rites by the Helof-Holm V.F.W. Post No. 1977 and Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post No. 163 and D.A.V. Homre-Giesen Chapter No. 8.

Rev. Donald Hawes will officiate, with Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah handling arrangements.

Gilles E. Flaherty was born March 2, 1917 in Ossian to John Arthur and Frances (Kobriger) Flaherty. He graduated from St. Francis De Sales Catholic High School in Ossian in 1933.

He served in the U. S. Army from Nov. 1942 to May 1945. While he was in the service, he traveled throughout the U.S. and was in seven foreign countries. He was disabled in the war, being injured in the campaign of Rhineland, Germany, where he was awarded the Purple Heart.

He married Luella Gardner in 1947, and they were later divorced.

Gilles Flaherty worked at the Ossian Creamery as a secretary for three years, and then at the Decorah creamery as butter and cheese maker for 34 years.

He had been a resident of the Oneota Riverview Care Facility since July 5, 1994.

He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and watching sports on TV.

Gilles E. Flaherty is survived by one son, James Flaherty of Montevido, Minn.; one daughter, Sharon Flaherty of Iowa City; one sister, Leona Wold of LeRoy, Minn., as well as two nephews, one niece, and two grandchildren, Niel and Ross.
