Kenneth J. Johnson

Kenneth J. Johnson, 75, of Bettendorf, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 at the Kahl Home in Davenport after a brief illness.

Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 8 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport.

Burial is at noon Tuesday, Jan. 9 at St. Benedict's Cemetery in Decorah. Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home in Davenport is handling arrangements.

Kenneth J. Johnson was born June 27, 1925 in Cedar Rapids to Alvin A. and Stella (Fahey) Johnson.

He attended Luther College and John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, and received his Industrial Engineering degree from Iowa State College in 1949.

He married Mary Lu Horton on June 7, 1950 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar.

After 33 years of service he retired as Chief of Maintenance for Large Caliber Weapons at AMCCOM located at the Rock Island Arsenal.

Kenneth Johnson was a Navy Veteran of World War II and Korea, and past Commanding Officer of the Davenport Naval Reserves, retiring as Commander, USNR.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral, serving as Eucharist minister and lecture. He was past president of the Sacred Heart School Board and served as an officer of the Parents Club.

Kenneth Johnson was a member and served on the Davenport Board of Directors of Rotary International. He was a member of Lindsey Park Yacht Club, and the first Chairman of the Planning Commission of Winneshiek County, serving 15 years on the Decorah Planning and Zoning Commission. He was also past Exalted Ruler of the Decorah Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lu Johnson of Bettendorf, daughters Ann K. (Johnny) Jackson of Tampa, Fla. and Elisabeth "Beth" J. (Doug) Holod of St. Paul, Minn.; a son Mark (Kathleen) Johnson of Houston, Texas; three granddaughters: Brittany Johnson and Anna and Monique Holod; three grandsons: Mark C. and Michael Johnson and Daniel Holod; sisters Mary Lou (John) Masla of Woodbury, Minn. and Karen (Bill) Traver of Park City, Utah.

Kenneth J. Johnson was preceded in death by a son, Karl Johnson, on June 28, 1986.
