Gordon Emory Hunter

Gordon Emory Hunter, 76, of Decorah, died Sunday, July 18, 1999, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah after a long illness.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 21, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.

Alan Sensor was the organist. Joan Schissel was the cantor.

Casket bearers were Gordon's grandchildren. Burial was at the church cemetery. The French & Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Gordon Emory Hunter was born May 13, 1923, in Tickett, Wis., the son of William Emory and Marguerite (Riesenweber) Hunter. He received his education in the local schools where he grew up, near Oshkosh, Wis.

On April 6, 1942, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth "Betty" Jungwirth in Winneconne, Wis.

Gordon grew up and farmed in Wisconsin from 1942 until 1967. In addition to farming, he also did contract trucking for farmers. While living in the Oshkosh area, he was a taxi driver and a township assessor.

He started working for Patz Co. in 1965. After becoming a district manager in Iowa, he sold the farm and moved to Manchester in 1967. In 1973, he bought two farms south of Decorah and had lived there ever since. Gordon retired from Patz Co. in 1985, after 20 years.

He was an avid outdoors man, enjoying hunting and fishing. Also, he was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church and a Knights of Columbus member.

Gordon had been a resident at the Aase Haugen Home since August of 1998 due to declining health.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; and 10 children, Virginia Albrecht of Helena, Mont., Bonnie and David Graska of Camarillo, Calif., Barbara and Edmund Pascoe of San Francisco, Calif., Suzanne Mittlestadt of Anchorage, Alaska, Mary Lou and Don Selle of Jenks, Okla., Jean Hunter and Lee Ellickson Sr. of Decorah, Gordon W. and Renate Hunter of Decorah, Gerald and Ruth Ann Hunter of Calmar, William and Marge Hunter of Greenville, Wis., and Peter Hunter and Marian Brem of Corpus Christi, Texas.

The 32 grandchildren are Theresa, Brian, Kevin, Timothy and David Peterson; Christina Nelson and Gary Nelson; William, Jeffrey, Gerald, Eric, Paul, Gordon Jr., Sara, Max, Lucas, Elizabeth, Robert and Ian Hunter; Chester Graska; Lisa Allen; Samantha and Zachary Pascoe; Jeffrey and Kristine Englehardt; Benjamin, Christopher and Matthew Mittlestadt; Laura, Robert and Jay Selle; and Sunshine Clausen.

The 23 great-grandchildren are Torranee Quinnell; Keith, Karsten, Kytlun; Jonathan, Esther, Elizabeth, Jacob, Nathaniel, Nicholas and Rachel Peterson; Samantha and Alyssa Nelson; Tiffany, Crystal and Kylie Hunter; Emily Allen; Samantha and Hannah Mittlestadt; and Dederic, Cylina, Scott and Hunter Englehardt.

Also surviving are three brothers, Lawrence and Evelyn Hunter of Oshkosh, Wis., Donald and Audrey Hunter of Walhalla, S.C., and Thomas Hunter of Beloit, Wis.; and one sister, Katherine Bean of Winnebago, Wis.

Gordon E. Hunter was preceded in death by one son, James Gordon Hunter, who died Dec. 14, 1959, and his parents.
