William A. Lange, 84, of Bluffton, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at his home in rural Decorah following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 15, at 11 a.m., at the Burr Oak United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Byron Perrine officiating.

Music was by Merilee Hein, organist.

Casket bearers were Dan, Jeff, Tim, Katie, Ben and Jennifer Lange, Chris Stoops, Collin Stoops, Laurie Peterson and Seth Weiss.

Honorary bearers were Ken Fry, Bill Crandall, Ralph Greenslade, Ronald Webb, Tom Crandall and Don Schnitzler.

Interment was at the Burr Oak Cemetery. The French & Balik Funeral
Home handled arrangements.

William was born May 16, 1916, in Gilby, Alberta, Canada, the son of Fred and Nora (Withers) Lange. He attended school in Bluffton and graduated from Burr Oak High School.

He then attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and returned to Bluffton, teaching school and farming.

He married Pauline Manning Dec. 5, 1936, in Lansing. In 1954 they moved to Marquette and he taught school at Mar Mac until 1960.

He then taught junior high science in the Elkader school system for 18 years, until retiring in 1978. William then returned to Bluffton, where he enjoyed his retirement years on his farm.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline Lange of Bluffton; two sons, Lowell and Shirley Lange of Hampton, and B. Davis and Susan Lange of Deerwood, Minn.; three daughters, Ardell and Curtis Stoops of Bella Vista, Ark., Jane Lange of Decorah, and Sally and Jimmie Wangen of Decorah; and one sister, Ruth Wallace of Independence.

There also are 10 grandchildren, Dan, Tim, Ben, Jeff, Katie and Jennifer Lange, Chris and Collin Stoops, Seth Weiss and Laurie Peterson; and nine great grandchildren, Shannon, Rebecca, Kristina, Eric, Michael, Matthew, Morgan, Adam and James.

William Lange was preceded in death by his parents.
