Ossian Business Man Killed In Auto Accident

Marvin Lantz, a well known Ossian business man, was killed early Tuesday evening in an automobile accident east of Ossian on highway 52 at an intersection with a county road. He was involved in a collision with a car driven by Ernest Groth, 33, who farms northeast of Castalia. Mr. Groth suffered only minor injuries in the crash.

Mr. Lantz had been in Elgin and was returning home when the accident occurred. He was taken by ambulance to the Decorah hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Marvin Gene Lantz was born Feb. 14, 1935, at Elgin, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lantz, of Elgin. On Dec. 13, 1957, he married Sandra Schave in the Elgin Lutheran church. To their union three children were born, all whom survive. They are Robert, 11, Michael, 10, and Lori, 7. In addition to his wife and three children, he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lantz, one sister, Janice (Mrs. Andrew Brackin) of Oelwein; one brother, David Lantz of West Branch; and two grandmothers, Mrs. Jane Moody and Mrs. Anna Lantz, both of Elgin.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in the Ossian Lutheran church by the Rev. A. Duane Manson. Pallbearers will be Orville Winger, Bradley Brockman and John Kazynski, all of Ossian; Howard Hanson of Decorah, Merlin Harnack of Postville and Milo Harnack of Calmar. Burial will be in the Frankville cemetery.

The body will lie in state at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. A prayer service will be conducted Thursday at 8 p.m. in the Schmitz funeral home. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.

As a mark of respect, Ossian stores will be closed Friday from 2 to 3 p.m. Mr. Lantz operated the Nicandy cafe in Ossian for the last five years.

Crash Kills Cafe Owner

CASTALIA, Ia. -- Marvin Gene Lantz, 35, operator of the Nicandy Cafe at Ossian, was killed Tuesday night in an auto accident about 16 miles southeast of Decorah.

Ernest F. Groth, 32, prominent farmer in the Castalia area and driver of the other car, was treated at the Postville Hospital and released.

Lantz was taken to the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Winneshiek County Sheriff Eugene Simenson said Lantz stopped at a gravel road intersection with U.S. 52, then apparently pulled out in front of Groth on the highway three ¾ of a mile west of here. Both cars were demolished.

The accident was investigated by both the sheriff's office and the Iowa Highway Patrol.

This was the first fatal traffic accident in Winneshiek County this year.

Lantz is survived by his wife and three children. Services are pending at the Schmitz Funeral Home at Ossian.

Killed In Auto Accident

Marvin Lantz, 35, Ossian, was killed in a two car accident Tuesday evening, on Hwy 52 about ¼ mile west of Castalia. He died at the Decorah Hospital.

He is survived by his wife and three children; also his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lantz, and a brother and sister

Mr. Lantz operated the Nicandy cafe in Ossian.

Funeral services are set for 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Lutheran Church, Ossian. The body will lie in state at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. Prayer service will be Thursday evening, 8:00 at the Schmitz Funeral Home, Ossian. Friends may call after 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

The driver of the other car was reported not seriously injured.
