A funeral mass for Joe Lechtenberg, 36, was held Friday, December 13, 1991, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Bridget Catholic Church at Postville. The mass was concelebrated by the Rev. David Ambrossy, Monsignor Donald Heinemann of St. Atkinson and the Rev. Richard Kuhn of Ossian. Jason Lechtenberg was the mass server. Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. The flag-draped casket was transported to the cemetery by the Postville Fire Department. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Joseph William Lechtenberg, son of James N. and Edna (Hackman) Lechtenberg, was born February 24, 1955, in Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital, Decorah, IA. He died Tuesday, December 10, 1991, in Postville, IA.

He was baptized March 6, 1955, and confirmed April 19, 1964, both in St. Francis DeSales, Ossian, IA. Joe attended school there and was graduated from Postville High School in 1973. He attended Northeast Iowa Community College at Calmar for one year.

On July 23, 1983, he was married to Jane Loftsgard in the Marion Lutheran Church, Gunder, IA. They had four children. Joe was a self-employed electrician. He and Jane owned and operated Lechtenberg Electric.

He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, William and Clara Hackman, and his father-in-law, Orven Loftsgard.

Surviving are his wife, Jane, a daughter, Jennifer; three sons, Nicholas, Scott and Eric; his parents, Jim and Edna Lechtenberg, of Postville, IA; his paternal grandparents, Joseph and Caroline Lechtenberg, Ossian, IA; his mother-in-law, Sylvia (Loftsgard) Cody and her husband, William; his wife's grandmother, Jennie Guyer, Clermont, IA; two brothers, Ronald (Jackie) Lechtenberg and Gary (Therese) Lechtenberg, all of Postville; three sisters: Diane Lechtenberg, Coralville, IA, Lisa (Nick) Radloff, Sioux Falls, SD, and Nancy Lechtenberg, Cedar Rapids; sisters-in-law: Lisa Loftsgard of Postville, IA, Mary (Steve) Follett of Mayer, MN; and Sara (Shane) Bell of Decorah, IA; a brother-in-law, Bradley (Gail) Loftsgard, of Festina, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville, had served on the Parish Council, and was past president. Joe was also a member of the Postville volunteer Fire Department and assisted the Ambulance Service.

Casketbearers were Dennis Turner, Craig Converse, Dwight Bacon, Michael Schutte, Gene Schnuelle, Larry Mork, Ted Hughes and Larry Schultz.

POSTVILLE BUSINESS OWNER JOE LECHTENBERG DIES

Postville businessman Joe Lechtenberg, 36, died in Postville last Tuesday, Dec. 10. He was owner of Lechtenberg Electric, along with his wife, Jane.

Born Feb. 24, 1955, in Winneshiek County Hospital, he attended school in Ossian and Postville, graduating from Postville High School in 1973. He attended Northeast Iowa Community College, Calmar, for one year.

He married Jane Loftsgard on July 23, 1983, at Marion Lutheran Church, Gunder. The couple had a daughter, Jennifer, and three sons, Nicholas, Scott, and Eric.

A member of St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville, he had served on the Parish Council, including being president.

He was also a member of the Postville Volunteer Fire Department and assisted the Postville Ambulance Service.

Lechtenberg was "very proud of his business", according to Mrs. Lechtenberg. The firm will continue in business only until it is finished with current jobs, she said. Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 13.
