Vernon D. Grinna was born Dec. 3, 1912 to Gustav and Thea (Benson) Grinna, on his parents farm in Frankville Township of Winneshiek County, Iowa. He died March 21, 1993 at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon. He was 80.

He attend rural "Pagin" school in Winneshiek County. He married Olive Ramstad at the Madison Lutheran Church parsonage in rural Decorah on May 19, 1945. Vernon served as Frankville Township Trustee for a time and was also a trustee, cemetery committee member and lifelong member of Glenwood Lutheran Church.

Vernon enjoyed fishing, hunting and other outdoor activities, as well as music. He farmed his whole life in Winneshiek County before retiring to Waukon in 1983.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Julian.

Survivors include his wife, Olive Grinna; two daughters, Donna (Dennis) Blumhagen of Castalia, Iowa, and Shirley (Bill) Holtey of Cedar Rapids; one son, Gary (Nancy) Grinna of Postville; three brothers, Grant (Stella), Marlin (Vivian) and Alden (Esther), all of Decorah; one sister, Helen Ruen of Decorah; one sister-in-law, Bernice Grinna of Decorah, and nine grandchildren.

Services were held Wednesday, March 24, 1993, at Glenwood Lutheran Church. Rev. Joseph Lambert officiated. Burial was at Glenwood West Cemetery.

Honorary casket bearers were Dan Otting, Joe Panoch, Art Ruen, Evart Hughes, Joe Tysland and Earl Koenig.

Casket bearers were Richard Stuckman, Leonard Crawford, Earl Gander, Wayne Brandt, Ted Feickert, Lloyd Berg, Byron Schultz and Loren Brandt.

Martin Funeral Home, Waukon, was in charge of arrangements.
