Funeral services for Orville Koenig were held Saturday, January 1, 2000 at 2 p.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Robert Hupp officiated. The organist was Ramona Everman with a duet by Ramona and Samantha Koenig, who played the piano. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Castalia, Iowa, where Taps was played by Kristi Conway and Betsy Koenig in honor of his military service.

Orville William Koenig, the son of W. C. and Emma (Schroeder) Koenig, was born September 23, 1921 on a farm near Castalia, Iowa. He passed away Wednesday, December 29, 1999 in Winneshiek County Memorial hospital at Decorah, Iowa. He had reached the age of 78 years, three months and six days.

He was baptized Orville Wilhelm John Koenig October 16, 1921 by the Rev. E. Schmidt and confirmed on April 5, 1936 by the Rev. R. B. Garten, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. He attended the Oak Hill School in Winneshiek County. On September 2, 1947 he was married to Irene Bachelder in the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. To this union five children were born. The farmed in the Castalia area all of their lives.

As a youth, Orville played baseball for the local Castalia team. On June 9, 1942 he was inducted in to the US Army Air Corps, where he was a radio operator. He served in the European Theater until he was discharged on December 17, 1945.

Orville enjoyed his work as a farmer and kept current by reading many farm magazines. He had no desire to do anything except farming and continued this interest until his death.

Surviving are his wife, Irene, his children, Sally (Pat) Conway of Castalia, Reid (Marsha) Koenig of Waverly, Iowa, Gale (Kathy) Koenig of Castalia and Lon (Cathy) Koenig of Castalia; 13 grandchildren, Scott Conway, Brian (Stacy) Conway, Todd Conway, Mrs. Sergio (Sara Conway) Calderon, and Kristi Conway; Anne, Laura, Jennifer, Betsy, Eric, Samantha, Rachel, and Daniel Koenig; two great granddaughters, Bianca Calderon and Rylie Conway.

Also surviving are three sisters, Charlotte Henning of Decorah, Iowa, Chrystal Longerbeam of Cedar Rapids, and Marian (Ray) Shafer of Waukon, Iowa; a sister-in-law Pat Koenig of Janesville, Iowa; several nieces, nephews and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Mark Koenig; and a brother, Merlin Koenig.

Orville was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville.

Casketbearers were his grandchildren.
