Funeral services for Vernon Kamp were held Saturday, April 15, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia, Iowa. The Rev. Dave L. Lenth officiated. The casketbearers were Trent Pearson, Todd Pearson, Kevin Kamp, David Winkie, Terry Esser, and Gerald Borwer, Jr. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Vernon C. Kamp, the son of Louis Kamp and Caroline "Lena" (Schara) Kamp, was born September 2, 1913 on a farm in Bloomfield Township near Castalia, Iowa. He passed away Wednesday, April 12, 2000 in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. He had reached the age of 86 years, seven months, and ten days.

He was baptized September 4, 1913 and confirmed in 1927, both in the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia, where he was a lifetime member. Vernon attended school at Castalia.

On December 13, 1939 he was married to Margaret Snitker. To this union three children were born. In their early years the couple lived in Ossian, but Vernon has spent most of his life as a resident of Castalia. Margaret passed away August 27, 1983.

Vernon was a cattle buyer and he farmed. He hauled milk and also was a self-employed truck driver for many years. At the age of 75 years, he retired. He enjoyed working in his garden and shared much of the produce. Vernon liked to go fishing and hunting, and he especially loved to hunt raccoons. Dancing was also a favorite pastime.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, his father, Louis Kamp and his mother, Caroline Kamp Perry, a brother who died in infancy, a brother, Louis Kamp, and his stepfather, Eugene Perry.

Surviving are his children, Karen Pearson and Gary (Dianne) Kamp, all of Marion, IA and Jolayne (Darrell) Winkie of Decorah, IA; five grandchildren, Trent and Todd Pearson, Kimberly and David Winkie and Kevin Kamp; three great grandchildren, Brandon, Amber and Emily Pearson; a sister, Viola "Jean" Boxrude of Cedar Rapids, his companion of many years, Ivanelly "Ivy" Stoeffler, other relatives and many friends.
