Ryan M. Monson, 28, of Decorah, died suddenly at his home on Wed., Jan. 23, 2002.
Services were held Sat., Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah. Rev. Gary Krapfl officiated. Interment was at Big Canoe Cemetery in Decorah.
Ryan Matthew Monson was born on Jan. 12, 1974, the son of Rick and Janice (Burke) Monson in Stuttgart, Germany. In March 1975, he moved with his family to Decorah. Ryan was baptized at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Albin; received his First Communion at St. Agnes-Plymouth Rock; and was confirmed at St. Benedict's Catholic Church.
Ryan graduated from North Winneshiek High School in 1992. He worked at Wal-Mart, Quality Pork in Austin, MN, and for the last five years at DECO Products in Decorah as a machine operator. He enjoyed fishing, riding his bike, music, camping, all sports, the outdoors, and spending time with his family and friends.
Ryan's survivors include his parents, Rick and Janice Monson, Highlandville; one sister, Amy Monson, and fiancé Joel Teslow, Decorah; maternal grandfather, Ray Burke, New Albin; his roommates, Craig Witt and Fawn Benson, Kenny Ewing and Stephanie Mork, and many close friends; his aunts and uncles, Joe Burke of Waukon, John Burke of Decorah, Jerry Burke and wife Diane of New Albin; James Burke and wife Andrea Smerud of Hortonville, WI, Jeff Burke and wife Mary of Decorah, Jay Burke of Austin, MN, Justin Burke of Sutherland, Mary Kay Lund and husband Oscar of Canton, MN, Deb Hackman and husband Larry of Calmar, and Sandra McFarlin and husband Marty of Racine, MN; several great-aunts, uncles, and numerous cousins.
Ryan was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth "Betty" Burke; paternal grandparents, Marvin and Ruby Monson; uncle, Wyatt Christopherson; cousin, Jeremiah Burke; and several great-grandparents and great-aunts and -uncles.
Honorary casketbearers were Joe, Jay, Jeff, James, John, and Justin Burke, Mary Lund, Deb Hackman, and Sandra McFarlin. Casketbearers were Craig Witt, Matt Stortz, Matt Oakes, Fawn Benson, Jerry Burke, Stephanie Mork, Kenny Ewing, and Larry Hackman.

Funeral services for Ryan Monson of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 26 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating. Interment was in Big Canoe Cemetery, rural Decorah. Schluter Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.Ryan, 28, died suddenly Wednesday, January 23, 2002 at his home.
He is survived by his parents: Rick and Janice Monson of Highlandville; and one sister: Amy Monson.
