NOTE ON PARENTAGE:
Knud Knudsen Neste (b. 1838, according to his obituary and grave marker) does not appear in the Vestre Slidre parish register for the date indicated.

Purported father, Knud K. Neste (b. 1817), and his wife Ingri Larsdatter Hambre/Hamre did not get married until 1843.

Instead, we find an illegitimate child Knud born 28 Aug 1837 to Knud Knudsen Wigh (now Vik) and the same Ingri Larsdatter Hambre.

The emigration register for Vestre Slidre parish records the following family group leaving for America on 30 Mar 1853:

Ingri Larsdatter, 35
Knud Knudsen Neste, 6 1/2, [born] 23/4/46
Sigri Knudsdtr. Neste, 4
Knud Knudsen Neste, 16, [born] 28/8/37

The emigration record thus supports the birth date as provided at his baptism.

It would appear that the older Knud Knudsen Neste (b. 1837) is a half-brother to the younger Knud Knudsen Neste (b. 1846), also buried in Union Prairie cemetery.

According to his baptismal record in 1837, Knud's biological father was Knud Knudsen WIGH (now spelled VIK). Studying Tore Ey's bygdebok, VANG OG SLIRE (1916), there were at least two Knud Knudsens on the cluster of Vik farms at that time who might have fathered Knud (b. 1837). There was a large cluster of VIK farms in Vestre Slidre at the time. The strongest possibility for who might have been Knud K. Neste's biological father is knut Knutson VIK (born 1814), son of Knut Tøllevson (Øvre) Vik and Sebiør Engebretsdatter Fauske, who later married Guri Eriksdatter Vik(-Bakken).*

Knud Knudsen Vik (age 35) and Guri Eriksdatter (age 18 1/2) were married in Vestre Slidre on 13 Apr 1849, the first marriage for both of them.

Knud died on Koljorde[t] farm, Vestre Slidre, 26 Feb 1867.

His widow Guri later remarried to Knud Samsonssen Vigh.
