Married 46 Years Ago.
At Marengo McHenry countv. Illinois, on the evening of September 9th, 1849, Mr. H G. Palmer and Miss Emma Hoag, both of Marengo.
On the evening of September 9th, 1895, at their home in Burr Oak township, Winnesheik county, Iowa, there was a renewal of the said occasion, so far as the guests were concerned. In the early evening, a company of invited friends gathered at the homo of Mrs. Alice Palmer Pierce, just across the way from Mr. Palmer’s, and at an appointed time marched across the road to surprise Mr. and Mrs. Palmer. This was done completely.
We found Miss Fanney Ferguson eating watermelon and Mr. Palmer reading his paper. Mr. P. answered the call at the door. After a look of surprise, he said: “Come in!” Then as they began to file in, in a surprised but welcome way, he again said: “Come in! Come in!” And they did come in, more than forty of them. “But, where is grandma?” say the grandchildren. Grandma, knowing something unusual was going on, was out watching the melon patch. When she came in, the surprise was so great, that Mrs. Palmer could only say: “Well, well! you have got me now; do as you like.” So they hung in her parlor a very nice lamp and lighted it. The ladies also put on the pantry shelves a set of “Cratsey’s” best dishes. Then the great extension table was brought out, loaded; a few remarks were made by one of the number, and a double thank you, and Rev. Hilburn asked a blessing.
We ate and chatted, till satisfied that we could not unload that table, and gave it up—that is the eating, not the chatting. Before we were aware of it, the 9th had passed, and we were quite a way on toward the 10th, so we adjourned as happy as happy could be.
