On July 3d, 1856, B. F. Newcomer and Miss A. Denney were united “for better or for worse,” and shortly after they left the “Hoosier” state, and coming west, settled on a farm in the Eastern part of Newberg township, in Fillmore Co., Minn. Some time in the seventies they moved onto their present homestead in the Eastern part of Hesper Twp. It not being convenient for their numerous friends to properly comemorate the event on July 3d, the matter was postponed until the 8th inst., at which time about one hundred and twenty of the afore mentioned friends, armed with heavily laden baskets, invited themselves to dine with Mr. and Mrs. Newcomer. Just after dinner the company was called together, and Prof. G. A. Oliver, on their behalf, presented the victims of the conspiracy with a one hundred piece set of beautiful dishes. The response by Mr. and Mrs. Newcomer was not a wordy one, but eloquence does not always consist of words. All in all it was a pleasant occasion and, with Prof. Oliver, we wish them “many returns of their fortieth anniversary,” and may the same company be there to help them celebrate.
