Celebrate Their Golden Wedding.
At their beautiful farm home in Bluffton township, Winneshiek county, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Terrence McCabe celebrated the fiftieth year of their married life, on Christmas day. In the year 1865, Dec. 25, Christmas Day, at St. Benedict’s Catholic church, Decorah, Iowa, Rev. Father Lowery officiating, Miss Mary E. Ryan gave the keeping of her hand and heart to that of Mr. Terrence McCabe, who has been a most faithful and devoted companion, during all those years, witnessed by Thomas Whalen and Miss Margaret McCabe. Mr. and Mrs. McCabe have reared a large family, sixteen children born to this union, twelve of whom survive. Four chairs left vacant, mute witnesses of those who have gone before. The children are Emma C., Frances M., William T., Theresa M., Lucy G., Mary E., Joseph E., Burhan V., Alice E., Harry P., Ellen F., and Eugene R., all of them married. Bernard, Thomas and Genevieve died in infancy and Myrtle at the age of nine years. Fifty grand children and four great grand children are numbered among the descendants.
Mr. McCabe was born near Woodstock, Ill., Sept. 2, 1841, and Mrs. McCabe, the eldest daughter of Mrs. T. Ryan, who is still living, was born May 18, 1847, in Canada.
In remembrance of the occasion Mr. McCabe was presented with a gold watch and chain and Mrs. McCabe with a gold cross and chain and a handsome gold brooch, Rev. Father Burke presenting same, speaking appropriate words for the occasion. The afternoon and evening were spent in various forms of amusements. In the late evening the jolly crowd departed for their homes wishing Mr. and Mrs. McCabe many more years of happy married life.—Decorah Journal.
