Fortieth Anniversary Surprise.
BURR OAK, Jan. 17, 1899.
A surprise was sprung upon W. C. Reed and wife by their children who planned and successfully carried it out as a reminder that they had arrived at the fortieth anniversary of their married life. According to previous arrangements they met at the family home on Saturday, Jan. 14th. When the first few sleigh-loads arrived Mrs. R., like a good house-wife, begun to look around, wondering, no doubt, if a miracle would not have to be performed to satisfy the multitude. A pan of potatoes she first came in contact with and began taking their jackets off. When her son Will appeared on the scene and told his mother that the commissary department was in proper hands and all that would be required of her would be to sit down and enjoy herself among her friends, it required some little time for her to realize the true state of things. To say that W. C. was surprised is putting it mildly. Upon the arrival of the daughters and daughters-in-law they took charge of the culinary department and began to unload barrels and boxes, baskets and dishes, and when the contents were spread out the tables fairly groaned beneath the weight of good things to satisfy the inner man. The children and grand-children were all present except Ed and his family, who are residents of St. Paul. The invited guests were Messrs. and Mds. A. J. Cratsenberg, C. O. Maltby, John Wingate, A. R. Perry and son, C. Webster and W. R. Van Vleit.
After spending a time in social intercourse dinner was announced and no doubt all did justice to the bounteous repast of which we were invited to partake. The appetites being appeased those of the male portion of the company who indulge in “the weed'' adjourned to the kitchen where a box of cigars was on tap and smoked until the air was blue.
We “old uns” regret that like occasions are not more frequent, as in the order of Pro{v}idence we have not many more years to count on at the longest. We might except “A. J.” who thinks he has a cinch on longevity and is planning for a grand blow out on his fiftieth anniversary, two years hence, and declares empathically that he will not be caught napping as he was three years ago on his forty-fifth anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. Reed were prese{n}ted by their children with n beautiful dinner set as a token of their regard and affection.
We, too, would wish Mr. and Mrs. Reed all the comfort and joys, not only of this life but the life that is to come.

Saturday, Jan. 14th, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Reed were given a very pleasant surprise at their home two miles east of Burr Oak. It was their fortieth wedding anniversary and a company of relatives and friends assembled to cerebrate{sp} the event; which not only proved a complete surprise to Mr. and Mrs. Reed but likewise a very pleasant affair for all present. A lovely decorated set of dishes was presented to the happy couple, after which an elaborate dinner was served. May Mr. and Mrs. Reed be blessed with health and life to celebrate their wedding anniversary for many years to come, is the wish of their many friends.
