On Jan. 27th, 1880, Ed. A. Griswold and Miss Ida Newcomer joined hands and began the journey of life together. Mr. and Mrs. B. P. Newcomer did not feel like going to Decorah to help them celebrate the anniversary of the event, so they invited them to Hesper to “help eat a chicken or two” on the afternoon of Jan. 27th. Nearly fifty of Mr. and Mrs. Griswold’s old friends also heard of the invitation and came to help them eat the chicken, and other good things. The howling blizzard without did not prevent the good cheer within, and when Frank Newcomer, “Hite’ Sherburn, Will “Hutch” and “My” Meader got to telling about teaming to the river forty years ago, with the mercury 40° below and no overcoats or overshoes, it made us wonder how they managed to live to tell the story. As Mr. and Mrs. Griswold had no need of a new supply of “china,” they were presented with a sufficient amount of silver to purchase a table upon which to spread their china.
