A Golden Wedding.
The neighbors, old friends and a few relatives living near who could be present, eight{y}-five in all, met at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Nciholson{sic} last Friday afternoon to help them celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Nicholson are of the large company of pioneers of Winneshiek County. They came to their present home in Military township in 1855 where they have since resided. Beginning with ox-teams as means of transportation and log houses for homes, they have witnessed the wonderful cultivation of the wild prairies, the building up of railroads, the development of the telephone, the institution of free rural mail delivery, up to the spacious residence and lovely lawns of today. Though they have had the hardships of pioneer life, yet they have many blessings for which to be thankful. With five sons and three daughters, twenty- two grandchildren and one great grandchild, only one grandchild is dead. The afternoon was spent in a quiet way visiting and renewing old friendships until 4.30 when all were invited to the kitchen where the tables were loaded with good things to which the company did ample justice. Flowers and bouquets, many of them presented by friends, were very beautiful, and the words “Give me the flowers now,” came to us as we saw them. Let us not wait until our friends are gone to bring our gifts of flowers. Two elegant reclining chairs, one rocking chair, a berry spoon and a jelly spoon were left with many kind wishes as tokens of good will and generous hearts. These gifts were highly appreciated. The donors, and all who participated, and all those who could not, will ever be held in kindly remembrance. Only death can obliterate the tender memories that will linger around this happy occasion as we continue our journey toward the evening of life.
