Last Friday was the twentieth anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Bear. They had not planned on more than a quiet family celebration of the event, but their friends of the whist club decided to give them a surprise, which was carried out; most successfully. At four o'clock the ladies of the club took possession of the Bear home and at six o’clock the gentlemen joined them. Not a member of the household knew of the plan, hence for once Mr. and Mrs. Bear were taken unawares completely.
After a delightful supper Dr. Conover, on behalf of the club, presented some beautiful pieces of china. He recalled the fact that he was telegraph operator in the depot at Conover at the time of Mr. and Mrs. Bear’s wedding and heard a score or more of congratulatory messages go over the wire. One of these made reference to u passage of Scripture which excited his curiosity and caused him to look it up. It was in effect, “May peace be within thy walls and prosperity within thy palaces. How truly that wish had been fulfilled was shown that no serious illness had befallen either Mr. Bear or his family and that they were all together, enjoying all the good things that the message suggested.
The occasion proved one which will live always in the minds of those who were so fortunate as to participate in it.
