Decorah Public Opinion, April 3, 1930

Charles Moore, one of Decorah's esteemed citizens celebrated his 85th birthday Sunday. He was born in Boone county, Ill., March 30, 1845 and came to Winneshiek county with his parents when he was five years old and has been a continuous resident here since. When the family arrived here they squatted in West Decorah. There were no buildings in Decorah at that time. They traveled from Illinois in an old fashioned covered wagon and when they arrived here had just actually 50 cents in cash and 19 head of cattle. They spent the 50 cents for molasses and then began the real work of establishing a pioneer home. At that time there was an Indian trading post where the Ed. Sharp farm is now located.
The family took up a homestead on a farm just a short distance northwest of Decorah, and this farm was handed down to the subject of this sketch who has owned it ever since. Some sixteen years ago Mr. and Mrs. Moore retired from the farm and have been esteemed and respected citizens of Decorah since.
Three children were born to the union, only one of whom survives, Louis J. Moore, a mail carrier out of the Decorah postoffice on R. F. D. No. 2.
Mr. Moore is one of Decorah's finest citizens, who counts his friends on every hand. He is generous and whole-souled and his life's record here has commended him to the confidence of his fellow citizens and Public Opinion extends sincere congratulations and good wishes to him on his 85th birthday, and trust that he will enjoy many more happy anniversaries with us.
Mr. Ben Bear, who has known Mr. Moore for 54 years, broadcast congratulations and good wishes to him over KGCA Saturday noon. "The Rosary," a beautiful composition by Ethelbert Nevins, with John McCormack's lovely tenor voice in it was broadcast in honor of Mr. Moore
