History of the Cremer farm in Germany
The Cremer family immigrated from the area of Meckinghoven of Datteln in 1847. The following information about the land that they farmed prior to immigration is provided by Hubert Bomas, a researcher from Germany who has given permission to use this material.
"The farm of the Rosenbaum-Cremers belonged to the “Damenstift Essen” which can be translated as “ladies’ convent Essen”. From time to time the farm was “behandigt”, which means the farm was handed to new owners which always were two persons, e. g. Johann Henrich Kraemer and his wife (probably not related to the Cremer's of concern in this study). In 1507 Johann von Aschebroik on the Malenburg was the owner [Bette]. In 1615 the farm was given to Jost and Franz Aschebrock. In 1666 the farm was sold to N. Prange. 1693 it was sold to Johan Rheidt in Horneburg. In 1718 it was given to Johann Henrich Kraemer and his wife. The owners were at these times not the farmers which were running the farm. In 1507 the farmer was Herman zu Wentrup. He was followed by his son Herman. In 1651 Henning Schroer was the farmer. In 1660 it was Willem Schroer [Burghardt1995]. At the end of the 17th century the farm was untentanted. In the 19th century this ownership structure came to an end. The farmers were allowed to buy their farms. In 1810 Wilhelm Rosenbaum-Cremer was called “Anpaechter” which means tenant [Hunke1949]. I do not know if the Rosenbaum-Cremers bought the farm before leaving to America. There is a census of 1817 which says that Johann Henrich Cremer, * 1797, son of Henricus, brother of Wilhelm, who both lived in this year on the Bienenhof, is a shoemaker [Communal1817]. Maybe he was the owner of the foot model and the cobbler bench. Wilhelm did the job of a farmer. He was temporarily liberated from military service since his mother was a widow and he had to run the farm.
There were three classes of farmers in Meckinghoven [Hunke1949]:
1. Bauer 2. Halbbauer 3. Koetter The Bauern had the largest farms. In 1810 Wilhelm Rosenbaum-Cremer was Bauer.
