PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941

James R. Battey, a brother of Nicholas Battey, was a native of Vermont. He was married in the same state to Miss Lois Knowles, also a native of Vermont, born there May 5, 1829. They came west for his health and settled in the village of Hesper. Here he was employed at the Tabor mill. His health did not improve and he passed away January 9, 1859. To this union two children were given: Lois Ann, deceased, and Susie, who married L. H. Tabor and who just recently passed away in California. Lois Knowles Battey remarried to Calvin Rowe, who was born October 3, 1834. They were parents of two children: Hattie, deceased, and H. C. Rowe of Hesper. One little incident of this family was that they owned the only rocking chair in the village. When people became ill the old rocking chair served as a comforter to many families.
