PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941

Charlie Morgan, son of Harley Morgan, pioneer from Jackson county, Iowa, was born August 24, 1847. In the year 1855 he came with his parents to Winneshiek county. At the age of sixteen he began the carpenter trade, which he followed most of his life. He was one of the first to own an interest in the Hesper Foundry and Machine Shop. He grew to be a leading contractor and builder, known through this section of the county and in Fillmore county, Minnesota. He built the present public school, Methodist and Lutheran churches, the old Lutheran church at Newburg, Minnesota, and the bank at Mabel. On January 13, 1869, he was united in marriage to Laura L. Hubbell. In the fall of 1880, he moved his machinery to Mabel, Minnesota, where he operated the finest machinery for wood turning, molding scroll work and all kinds of work of that nature.
