Donald Geiken
November 4, 1935 - Died July 1, 2014DONALD GEIKEN, 78, of Buffalo Center, died on Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa in Mason City.
Donald Duane Geiken was born on November 4, 1935, the only child of Anthony Gerhardt and Emma (Davids) Geiken. He attended school in Buffalo Center, graduating with the class of 1953. Then, he worked at the Weaver Filling Station and drove truck for Honken Livestock.
On August 18, 1954, Don married Darlene Tapper at the Ramsey Reformed Church of rural Titonka. He, then, worked near Swea City for Wallace (Buzz) Reynolds as his hired man. There, Don and Darlene began rearing their four daughters: Denise, Dixie, Dorilynn, and Donna. Following his father’s death in 1963, Don moved the family to his parents’ farm south of Buffalo Center. He and his wife farmed for forty-nine years, and he still had his finger in operations even after retiring and renting out his land.
Don enjoyed regaling visitors with stories of his travels throughout the US and was always up for a lively discussion on any topic. He enjoyed playing 500 with his family, teaching the game to all his children and grandchildren. He was constantly “thinking” about and looking out for his grandchildren, whether ensuring they had furniture for a first apartment, providing a car for getting back and forth to college, or giving blunt grandfatherly advice (both solicited and unsolicited).
Don was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Ruby (Mann) Geiken. He will be dearly missed by Darlene, his wife of almost sixty years; his daughters and their families: Denise (Daryl) Philipp, Dixie (Jim) Carpenter, Dorilynn (Ronald) Gimondo, and Donna (Geoffrey) Wallace; his grandchildren DeNae (Scott) Cramer; Darci (Chris) Grave; Kelsey (Allen) Reger; Anthony (Ariel), J. Austin, and Andrea Gimondo, and Andrew and Ashleigh Wallace; and his great-grandchildren, Caden and Reagan Cramer.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Graceland Cemetery in Buffalo Center.
