Carmen M. Thorson, age 92, of Rochester, formerly of Kiester, Minnesota, died on Monday, December 27, 2010, at the Samaritan Bethany Home on 8th in Rochester, Minnesota.

Carmen was born on December 20, 1918, in Kiester, Minnesota, the daughter of John and Ida (Johnson) Johnson. On January 23, 1938, she married Russell Carl Johnson in Kiester, Minnesota. After Russell’s death in 1958, she married Orville Thorson. They moved to Mesa, Arizona, living there for thirty years. In 2001, she moved to Rochester, Minnesota.

Carmen loved flowers, gardening, cooking, baking, and playing cards and bingo. She especially loved spending time with her family and friends. A big fan of baseball and basketball, she especially enjoyed following the Minnesota Twins and the Phoenix Suns. A member of Trinity Lutheran Church and an active member of her church in Phoenix, she had an exceptionally strong faith in God and enjoyed Bible Study.

The youngest of seven children and the last surviving, Carmen leaves behind two children: Darlene (Dick) Aske, of Rochester, Minnesota, and Roger (Tracy) Johnson, of Minnetonka, Minnesota; a former daughter-in-law: Karen Brubak, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; five grandchildren: Kim Gizzi, of Rochester, Minnesota, Kirk (Cathy) Aske, of Chatfield, Minnesota, Pam (Mark) Marti, of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Greg (Deb) Johnson, of Rosemount, Minnesota, and Amy (Rob) Griffin, of Little Rock, Arkansas; eleven great-grandchildren: Justin (Jenni Shellhammer) and Allyson Gizzi, Claire and Emma Marti, Lexi, Carley and Riley Johnson, and Grace, Anna, Sylvia, and Reidar Griffin; three great-great grandchildren: Destiny, Taylor, and Makenna; as well as a host of nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husbands, Russell, in 1958, and Orville, in 1984; as well as three brothers and three sisters. Memorials preferred to Samaritan Bethany Home on 8th, 24 – 8th Street NW, Rochester, Minnesota 55901.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, December 31, 2010, at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Kiester, Minnesota. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Pastor Chris Fiske will officiate and burial will take place in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Eden Twp., Winnebago Co., Iowa. The Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells is in charge of arrangements.
