VaLorus Hoiseth
July 4, 1922 - September 30, 2009

Val was born in Bricelyn, Minnesota, on the 4th of July in 1922, the daughter of Oscar and Hazel (Bravick) Flo. Val’s mother died when she was a toddler, and she was graciously cared for by her aunts and uncles, Gertie and Ole Sunde and Peter and Lydia Flo, in the Bricelyn area. She married Herbert Hoiseth in 1940, and to this union six children were born: Barbara, Steven, K.W., Michael, Richard and Kathryn. They were later divorced.

With lots of tender loving care and hard work, Val raised her six children, always putting everyone else first, never complaining. She worked until she was 85, having toiled in onion fields, as a waitress, and for twenty-six years as a cook at Woodvale. In addition to attending to her jobs and her family, she also found time to volunteer at the Eagles and the Moose Clubs. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church.

VaLorus loved to travel with her family, having gone to Europe four times. She enjoyed boating and pontooning, loved to read, especially cookbooks, and would never miss laughing at a good Ole and Lena joke.

VaLorus died on Wednesday, September 30, 2009, with her family at her side. She was 87. She is survived by her children: Michael (Wanda) and Richard (Judy) Hoiseth, Barbara (Irv) Lampman, and Kathryn (John) Knutson, all of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and K.W. Hoiseth (Taka), of Leesville, Louisiana; her grandchildren: Ronda (Ron) Osborne, of Tampa, Florida, Kevin Hoiseth and Tiffany (Josh) Maks, of Leesville, Louisiana, Jodi Brackey, of Chandler, Arizona, Jeffery, James, Jason, and Anthony Hoiseth, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Jennifer (Tom) Keller, of Rochester, Minnesota, Laura Nelson, of Stewartville, Minnesota, Bobby Hoiseth, of Austin, Minnesota, Nicholas (Alicia) Hoiseth, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Tarah Hoiseth, of Manly, Iowa, Julie (Brad) Larson, of North Branch, Minnesota, and Janice (Brad) Adams, of Gordonsville, Minnesota; thirteen great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; her brother, Myron Flo, of Sullivan, Maine; and her step-sister, Beverly Farris, of Fargo, North Dakota.

Val was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Hazel Flo; her step-mother, Minnie Flo; her step sister, Martha Streater; and her son, Steven Hoiseth. Val will also be affectionately remembered to many as “Grandma” as she easily made friends with many of all generations.

The Funeral Service for VaLorus “Val” L. Hoiseth of Albert Lea will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, October 9, 2009, at the First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, Pastor Dan Baker officiating. Interment will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Winnebago County, Iowa. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea, and one hour before the service at the church.

Blessed be her Memory!
