Walter Raymond Flugum
(January 11, 1914 - July 30, 2010)

Walter R. Flugum, age 96, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died Friday, July 30, 2010, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

Walter Raymond Flugum was born January 11, 1914, in Lake Mills, Iowa, to Ingebrigt N. and Mary (Hermanson) Flugum. He was baptized by Rev. H. Ingebretson of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod Church and confirmed by Rev. O.R. Sletten at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills.

Walter attended grade school in the one-room Midlang country school in Norway Township and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1932. Following high school, he farmed with his parents for about five years. Walt then went on to attend and graduate from the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis. In 1939, Walt worked for the Graphic Publishing Company and then was employed by Co-op Services, Inc.

On March 24, 1944, Walter entered the United States Navy for 26 months. He served during WWII and was honorably discharged on May 15, 1946. In late 1946, Walter took a temporary job with Fond du Lac County Co-op in Wisconsin, and in mid-December of that same year, he returned to Co-op Services in Lake Mills. Walter was employed as office manager and accountant and remained an employee there until his retirement on April 30, 1984.

Walter was united in marriage with Carma (Hovland) Moe on February 22, 1986, at Salem Lutheran Church. The couple had courted for years, and recently celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary. Walt was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and served in various capacities as long as he was able. In 2004, Walter was awarded a certificate for being a 60 year member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Carma of Lake Mills; three children, Duane (Karen) Moe of Forest City, IA, Arlene (Wayne) Sprecher of Lake Mills, IA, and Warren (Jean) Moe of Urbandale, IA; ten grandchildren, Debbie (Steve) Strom, Deanna Aasland, Dale (Paula) Aasland, Colette Wyatt, Doug Aasland, Jeff (Sheila) Moe, Amy Shaver, Rhonda (Dan) Schriever, Kevin Sprecher, and Kyle Sprecher; 31 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ingebrigt and Mary Flugum; four sisters, Martha Flugum, Ida Helland, Ingeborg Galati, and Edith Elvebak; a great-granddaughter, Megan Charlson; and two great-great grandchildren, Tristan Charlson and Brianna Crail.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 2, 2010, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor Steve Smith officiating.

Burial will take place at Salem Memorial Cemetery, rural Lake Mills, with military honors conducted by the Otto Chose Post #235.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
