Irvin D. Krieger - Feb. 7, 1932 - Apr. 22, 2010
FOREST CITY - Irvin D. Krieger, 78, of Forest City died Thursday (April 22, 2010) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.
Dean was born February 7, 1932, in Burt, Iowa, the son of Irvin A. and Grace (Robinson) Krieger. His mother Grace passed away in 1935 when Dean was three years of age. His father was remarried to Blanche Peters in 1939 when Dean was seven. He attended rural school and graduated from Waukon High School in 1950.
After graduation, Dean enlisted in the United States Air Force and enjoyed a twenty-two year career working as an airplane/propeller mechanic. His time in the service allowed him to travel the world while stationed in many locations including Morocco, Germany, Turkey, and Hawaii as well as many others in the continental United States. He also served in the Vietnam War where he received “The Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service”.
During leave from the service, Dean met his future wife, Beverly J. Pitkin, while attending a youth function with his sister, Dorothy, at Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City. They were united in marriage on December 30, 1955, and to this union four children (David, Diane, Debra, and Daryl) were born. He retired from the Air force as a Master Sergeant in 1972 and returned with his family to Forest City. Dean worked at Winnebago Industries, McCoy’s Nursery, and the Good Samaritan Center before final retirement in 1999.
Dean accepted the Lord Jesus as his personal savior on the day of his father’s funeral, November 2, 1954. He was baptized into the Baptist church and actively served wherever the family lived. He served in many capacities including: Deacon, Sunday school teacher, Awana Clubs, usher, bus driver, building maintenance and custodian.
Dean was a devoted husband and loving father who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially at the family (Pitkin) cabin on Clear Lake. Later in life he enjoyed going with his children and grandchildren on family trips to visit his son David and his family who were stationed abroad with the U.S. Army. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Dean is survived by his daughter, Debra Nelson (Tim) of Forest City; two sons, Dr. David Krieger (Un Hui) of Springfield, Va.; Daryl Krieger (Tammy) of Forest City; son-in-law, Joe Fiala of Clear Lake; nine grandchildren, Nathan Nelson (Jane); Nicholas Nelson; Mitchell Krieger; McKenzie Krieger, all of Forest City; Ashley Krieger; Kristine Krieger, both of Springfield, Va.; Alan Abrams of Lakeville, Mn.; Jennifer Krachmer of Northwood; Lonny Fiala of Mason City; nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; three sisters, Dorothy Anderson (Marvin) of Forest City; Catherine Schroeder (Don) of Rochester, Mn.; Verna Knutson (Vernon) of Rochester, Mn.; sister-in-law, Sheryl Johnson (Ralph) of Forest City; brother-in-law Milo Pitkin (Deloris) of Rockford, Ill.; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Irvin A. Krieger; mother Grace Krieger; stepmother, Blanche Krieger; wife, Beverly Krieger; daughter, Diane Fiala; and great grandson William Fiala.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Monday, at Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City with Rev. Doug Farrell officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township with military rites by the Leland VFW Post 6161.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 P..M., Sunday, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
The family requests memorials be directed to Calvary Baptist Church, Good Shephard Care Center or Hospice of North Iowa.
