Caroll Lee Herndon
May 29, 1932 - July 4, 2016

Caroll Lee Herndon, 84, of Forest City, died on Monday, July 4, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City, Iowa.

Caroll Lee Herndon, the eldest son of George and Lemma (Rhoads) Herndon, was born on May 29, 1932, in his grandparent’s home in Putnam County, Missouri. Growing up in a farming family, he developed a lifelong love of the land.

Caroll came from a long family of patriots, dating back to pre-revolutionary America. He, proudly, served his country through two tours of duty with the Air Force. His assignments took him to numerous bases across the United States as well as to Morocco and Greenland. Eventually, the tele-communications skills he learned in the Air Force led a lifelong career with General Telephone.

In 1954, Caroll married his high school sweetheart, Marie Zweibohmer. Following his discharge from the Air Force, they made the Forest City area their home in 1960 and raised their family there.

Caroll’s commitment to justice for all led to leadership roles with the CWA and active participation in the political process. Lively discussions of the latest world events over coffee were a favorite pastime.

A hobby farmer before the pursuit became popular, he raised small herds of sheep or cattle, a bountiful garden, and gorgeous flowers. After he retired, he served as a volunteer with Pheasants Forever. Committed to stewardship of our natural resources, he promoted the re-building of native Iowa habitat. Indeed, through Pheasants Forever programs, he sought to pass on his love of nature to young people.

Adventurous, engaging, and never without a joke or a story to share, he had an outgoing spirit. One of his greatest sources of pride and joy came from his three generations of offspring.

Caroll was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lemma Herndon. He is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Marie; their five children: Theresa Lewis (Doug), Lorna Zrostlik (Dave), Steve Herndon (JoAnn), Paul Herndon (Kari), and Ann Jones (Dallas), fourteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a younger brother, Leon Herndon (Barb); and two nieces.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the many who played an important role in providing guidance and kindness during Caroll’s last days and months, including Nirmal Bastola, MD, Forest Plaza, and the Good Samaritan Center.

A Funeral Mass will be offered at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, July 9, 2016, at St. James Catholic Church, 906 West O St., Forest City, with Father Paul Lippstock officiating. Burial will follow at St. James Catholic Cemetery in Forest City with Veteran Honors conducted by the Forest City American Legion. A lunch will follow in the church hall. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M., Friday, at the Cataldo Schott Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark St., Forest City, with a Scriptural Wake Service at 4:00 P.M. Visitation will, also, continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Caroll Herndon memorial fund in care of the family.
