June 26, 1952 - October 2, 2015

Steven C. Vaagen, 63, of Marshalltown, formerly of Forest City, died on Friday, October 2, 2015, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

Steven C. Vaagen was born on June 26, 1952, to Paul and Betsy Vaagen in Forest City, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. After graduation from Forest City High School, he enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during the Vietnam War. He specialized in and excelled at secure communications. At one point, his superiors honored him by recruiting him to West Point, but after careful consideration, he declined the offer.

Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Steve began working at Control Data in Mission, Kansas, as a Senior Customer Engineer in the Engineering Service Division. He remained with Control Data until he retired because of his deteriorating health. Diagnosed with M.S., he, eventually, moved to the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown.

His hobbies included CB radios, shortwave radios, computers, and all types of electronics. He enjoyed motorcycling and playing pool. In addition, he loved dogs, especially his Alaskan malamute, “Klondike.”

Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Betsy Vaagen, of Forest City; his sister, Julie (Darrell) Vaagen-Smith, also of Forest City; his nephew, Bjorn (Amanda) Vaagensmith, of Brookings, South Dakota; his nieces, Anna Vaagensmith, of Forest City, and Quincey Vaagensmith (fiancé Jonathan Krein), of Mankato, Minnesota; as well as his family at the Iowa Veterans Home. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Vaagen, and his grandparents.

Steven was a wonderful and much loved man.

Funeral services will be held in Marshalltown at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2015, at the Iowa Veterans Home Chapel. He will be laid to rest in the Oakland Cemetery at Forest City. Visitation will be one-hour prior to the services. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Steven and his family.
