(May 02, 1936 - October 09, 2015)Jerome William “Joe” Sheldon, 79, of Lake Mills, Iowa, passed away on Friday, October 9, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.
“Joe” Sheldon was born to Otto and Cora (Skaare) Sheldon on May 2, 1936, on a farm one and one half miles south of Rake, Iowa. He attended country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1954. That summer, he enlisted in the Marine Corps where he picked up the nickname “Joe.” He served a number of years with great pride, laughingly calling the Marines “Jarheads.”
On July 5, 1963, Joe married Ruth Krull at the Winnebago Lutheran Church. He worked hard all his life, first on his dad’s farm, helping bale hay and haul manure for neighbors. In addition, he learned how to build buildings working with his dad’s construction crew. From 1963 to 1974, he worked at Winnebago Industries in the cabinet shop, and at one time, he helped build houses for Winnebago. Beginning in 1974, Joe worked at the Forest City Millworks until the business was sold. Then, he worked at Leland Woodworks until he retired in 2001. After retiring, however, he worked at Branstad Farms doing cattle chores and field work. Indeed, the day he left this life, he was chopping cornstalks at Branstad Farms, his favorite job.
Joe loved life and had a great laugh that started at his feet and came all the way up. He loved to play cards with friends and enjoyed having cattle, hogs and cats when he and Ruth moved to an acreage in 1978. They moved to Lake Mills in June of this year.
Joe was a wonderful husband and Ruth’s best friend. Those left to morn him include Ruth, his wife of 52 years; and a sister-in-law, Betty Krull, of Mason City, Iowa; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Oliver, and his wife, Evelyn, and Albert, and his wife, Mae; his mother- and father-in-law, Rosella “Lindy” and Fim “Swede” Krull; his brother-in-law, Keith Krull, and his nephew, Gary Sheldon.
Joe’s family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Monday evening, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450. Joe did not wish to have a service. A family inurnment will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City, Iowa, at a later date.
