August 20, 1925 - February 11, 2015

Kathryn (Kay) Larson, age 89, of Longview, Washington, died peacefully in Portland, Oregon, on February 11, 2015. She will be laid to rest at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Kathryn Jean (Tweeten) Larson was born in Mount Valley Township outside of Forest City on August 20, 1925, to Bennie and Clara (Swenson) Tweeten. Confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Forest City in May, 1940, she graduated from Forest City High School in 1943 and attended classes in Des Moines before her marriage to Melvin Larson, also of Forest City, in 1945.

In 1961, Kay and her family moved to Tucson, Arizona. After her children were grown, she attended the University of Arizona where she studied writing. In the following years, she wrote many short stories, self-published two books of poetry and wrote a novel. She also began to paint and had some of her paintings displayed in an art gallery in Colorado.

Kay had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. She had a keen philosophical and creative mind, loved music, played the piano, and had a beautiful voice. She was also inspired by and truly appreciated all things in nature.

She is survived by her sister, Arlene Grimm; and two sisters-in-law, Delores Tweeten and Darlene Tweeten; her children, Penny Johnson, Larry Larson, Janell (David) Collier, and Heidi Larson; her grandchildren, Sarah Kelly, Kendra Lien, and Emily, Hillary, and Abby Larson; her great-grandchildren, Jasper (Kelly) Hillesland, Thaine (Lien) Sanders, and Rilyn (Larson) Gilbert.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Lehman, Orville, and Walden Tweeten; her sister-in-law, Wanda Tweeten; and former husband, Melvin Larson.

In her later years, Kay enjoyed her morning reading and writing, her faith, and especially her visits with family and friends. She was much loved and will be greatly missed.
