John Canterbury
August 22, 1948 - April 8, 2014

JOHN CANTERBURY, age 65, of Rake, Iowa, died on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, of Meningitis with complications at the Mayo Mankato Hospital.

John Mack Canterbury was born to Mack and Jean (Espeland) Canterbury on August 22, 1948, in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Since Mack was serving in the US Air Force, John went to various schools including ones in New Mexico; Rake; Laon, France; Ramstein, Germany; and Ulm, Germany; as well as to three schools in Rapid City, South Dakota, before starting the 8th grade in Rake, Iowa, where he graduated in 1966.

John met Suzanne Flint while attending Iowa State University in Ames. They married on November 23, 1968, and moved to Chicago, Illinois, where John worked in a factory until he secured a job with the Post Office. In the early 70s, they moved back to the area, and John worked at Brown Printing in Waseca, Minnesota. While living in the Faribault and Owatonna area, he worked at various factory jobs through the years. While working at Crown Tonka in Winnebago, Minnesota, he lived in Easton, Minnesota. Eventually, he bought an acreage near Rake and worked in Blue Earth at Seneca Foods as a fork lift driver and at Kerry Foods. He retired from there to do night shifts while taking care of his mom who has Alzheimer’s.

Nicknamed Mozus by his friends, John loved the outdoors, going fishing or puttering around his acreage. He liked to read and paint. Moreover, he loved his family and friends and very much enjoyed spending time with them. A very caring person, he would help anyone in need.

He is survived by his mother, Jean Canterbury; his brothers, Eric (Laura) and David Canterbury; his sister, Julia (Terry) Hatch; and his nieces, Anna Moklestad, Alison (Marty) Tindall, Andrea (Jason) Spencer, and Crystal Legried; as well as by several grandnieces and grandnephews.

John was preceded in death by his father, Mack Canterbury; his wife, Suzanne; his niece, Angela; two grandnieces and one grandnephew; and his grandparents.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at 2:00PM at Zion Lutheran Church, Rake, Iowa, with Pastor Terry Mahnke officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date. A fellowship time will be held immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church.
