Craig Allen Monson
November 29, 1948 - February 17, 2014Craig Allen Monson, 65, died on Monday, February 17, 2014, near his home in rural Forest City.
Craig Allen Monson was born on November 29, 1948, in Winnebago County, the son of Ruthford B. and Doris Ilene (Myre) Monson. Baptized and confirmed at the Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, Craig remained a life-long member. He attended and then graduated from Forest City High School in 1967. For a short time, he, also, enrolled at NIACC before volunteering to serve his country in the United States Army. He completed his first tour in Vietnam in 1969, where he was decorated for combat duty. He, later, served a second tour while stationed in Hawaii until he was summoned home to attend his brother Norman’s funeral and to help his dad on the farm. Afterward, he was honorably discharged from the Army.
On November 4, 1967, Craig married Kris Dunbar. To this union, two sons, Brian and Shawn, were born; their marriage, however, was, in time, dissolved. On October 14, 1978, Craig married Teresa Ann Stough at the Winnebago Lutheran Church. They were blessed with three children, Colby, Cohen, and Callen. Craig and Teresa raised their children on the family farms in Mount Valley Township where he raised beef cattle with his dad. After his father's death, he carried on this operation with the help of his son, Colby. Craig also worked at the 3M warehouse in Forest City for twenty-nine years before taking early retirement in 2010 because of his father's failing health.
A gifted mechanic, Craig had a passion for farming and for Harley Davidson Motorcycles. Moreover, he shared this passion with his son, Colby. They enjoyed working on and building motorcycles together. They always loved the feel of the open road under their Harleys. In addition, Craig enjoyed movie nights out with his family, grilling out, watching U.F.C fights, and most of all, spending time with his family and friends. He always had time to visit and always had a contagious smile on his face. In short, he enjoyed life and all the friends he made over the years.
A loving and thoughtful husband, father, and friend, he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife, Teresa, of Forest City; his children, Brian Monson and Shawn Monson, of Seattle, Washington, and Colby, Cohen, and Callen Monson, all of Forest City; his grandsons, Logan and Drew Monson, of Seattle, Washington; his siblings, Ardie (Dale) Johnson, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Murray (Donna) Monson, of Boone, Iowa, and Mark Monson, of Mora, Minnesota; his sister-in-law, Elaine Dralle, of Knoxville, Iowa; his brothers-in-law, Barry Stough, of Alma, Colorado, and Greg and Steve Stough, both of Charles City, Arnie Stough, of New Hampton, Kevin Stough, of Nashua, Iowa, and Ken (Lori) Stough, of Pella, Iowa; his aunts, Fern Rollefson, of Forest City, Babe Hagenson, of Thompson, Iowa, and a very special auntie, Evelyn Hanna, of Mason City; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Norman; and his mother- and father-in-law, Harry and Margaret Stough.
