October 9, 1922 - December 26, 2007FOREST CITY - Fern L. Johnson, age 85, of Forest City, died on Wednesday, December 26, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.
Fern L. Johnson was born on October 9, 1922, in Forest City, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Hazel (Peters) Holcomb. She received her education in Forest City schools and graduated from Forest City High School.
On April 18, 1948, she married Orville Johnson. They made Forest City their home throughout their married lives. For many years, Fern worked at Gert’s Fabric Shop in Forest City, staying on when it became Doris’s Fabric Shop and eventually retiring when the store closed. She helped her husband, Orville, with the farming operation as well.
An active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City, Fern taught Sunday School and served on the Sewing Circle and the Mission Circle. She loved to sew and enjoyed baking for her family. For many years, Fern and Orville spent their winters in Florida and most recently in Texas. Fern loved to spend a day with Orville at an amusement park such as Adventure Land, Valley Fair, or Six Flags.
Fern is survived by her husband, Orville, of Forest City; and her sisters, Myrna Oudekerk and Geneva Merchant, both of Forest City; as well as by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Milo and Kenneth Holcomb; and her sisters, Ila Jean Oudekerk and Sharon Thompson.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, December 28, 2007, at 10:30 AM at Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City with Pastor Douglas Farrell officiating. Burial will be at Madison Township Cemetery in rural Forest City. Visitation will be an hour prior to service at the church.
