FOREST CITY - Robert "Bob" Benson, 89, of Forest City, died on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Robert Everett Benson, the son of Torsten (Tom) and Hannah (Vorland) Benson, was born on November 18, 1923, on a farm north of Britt. As a child, he attended country school near his home until the eighth grade and then helped his family on the farm.

On August 13, 1945, Bob married Katherine Jessie Rollefson at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. They lived in the Forest City area where they farmed and raised their family. In addition, Bob worked at the Neils Spur Elevator and was an original employee for Chuck Holland in the tiling business. Following Jessie's death on December 2, 1992, Bob continued to operate the farm northeast of Forest City where he lived until his retirement at the age of 80. On April 29, 2013, he married Diane Engebretson Schisel in Forest City. Bob enjoyed training, riding, showing horses, following baseball, golfing, riding motorcycles, playing pool, and dancing. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Eagle's Club.

Bob is survived by his wife, Diane, of Forest City; five children, David Benson, of Lake Mills, Lynn (Marcia) Benson, of Ventura, Lori (Brian) Tomasek, of Cedar Rapids, Randi Benson, of Forest City, and Steven (Susan) Benson, of Northwood; two step-daughters, Lori Glenn, of Cedar Rapids and Wanda (Kyle) Schisel, of Coggon, Iowa; his grandchildren, Sheldon (Tenisha), Travis (Amy), Aaron, Logan, Coltn, and Hunter Benson; Dakota, Nick, and Kyle Glenn; and Breckyn and Kasyn Betenbender; his great-grandchildren, Annika, Toni, Rebecca, Brandi, Kelsey, Karson, and Kourtney; three sisters, Marjorie Anderson and Dorothy Etzen, both of Forest City, and Thelma Smith, of Grand Junction, Colorado; and a sister-in-law, Blanche Benson, of Forest City; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Jessie; his brothers, Norman, Vance, and Victor Benson; his sister, Alice Gerdes; a step-daughter, Jody Schisel; a grandson, Derek Benson; and a granddaughter, Morgan Betenbender.

Memorial services for Robert Benson will be held 2:00 P.M., Sunday, August 4, 2013, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Rev. Rodd Hopp officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. The Petersen Lund Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
