February 5, 1920 - May 31, 2008FOREST CITY - Loren O. Indvik, age 88, of Forest City, died on Saturday, May 31, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.
Loren O. Indvik was born on February 5, 1920, on a farm west of Forest City in Winnebago County, Iowa, the son of Oscar and Myrtle (Groath) Indvik. He received his early education in a rural school near his home. Then, he attended Forest City High School before graduating from Thompson High School.
When Loren was eleven years old, his father died. Subsequently, the family continued to live in Winnebago County until World War II began. Shortly after December 7, 1941, however, Loren enlisted in the US Army Air Corps, serving as a mechanic stationed in Iceland. Following his honorable discharge from the service, he enlisted in the Reserves and returned to Iowa.
On June 18, 1948, Loren married Betty Faber at the First United Methodist Church in Forest City. In 1950, Loren was recalled to active duty in the service, and the family moved to California. During the Korean Conflict, he was stationed in Japan for thirteen months. Upon returning to the states, he was stationed in Amarillo, Texas, for thirteen years. Nonetheless, during his final year in the Air Force, he was stationed in Taiwan during the Vietnam War.
In 1968, Loren retired from the United States Air Force after twenty-seven years of service. At that time, the family moved to Forest City where he worked for the US Postal Service before retiring in 1979.
A big Cardinals baseball fan, Loren also enjoyed crossword puzzles, Scrabble in the park, and playing bingo. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 121 in Forest City.
Loren is survived by his wife of almost sixty years, Betty Indvik, of Forest City, and five children: Stephen Indvik, and wife, Joan Stockinger, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Randy and Maureen Indvik, of Johnston, Iowa, Scott and Vicky Indvik, of Phoenix, Arizona, Mark and Sandi Indvik, of Boone, Iowa, and Sandy Baade, and her husband, Jerry, of Titonka, Iowa; four grandchildren, Christopher and Brandon Lamping and Katy and Joe Indvik; and two sisters, Margaret Larson and Anna Mae Orvick, both of Britt, Iowa; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Loren was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Oscar, Jr.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at 1:30 PM at the United Methodist Church in Forest City with Pastor Jerald Swanberg officiating. Burial will be at Madison Township Cemetery in rural Forest City with graveside military rites by Forest City American Legion Post 121. Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service at the church.
